Annual report 2014
The Malawi.kom Foundation, founded in 2004, aims to improve health care in Malawi with a specific focus on surgical and urological training / teaching in District and Mission Hospitals.
TOOLS & SKILLS
The intention of the TOOLS & SKILLS Programme which officially has been accepted with open arms by CHAM (Christian Health Association of Malawi) is to teach and train basic surgical / urological skills at district level, at the same time making available the necessary tools to be able to put the skills into practice.
As part of this programme in March workshops and presentations have been organised in South Malawi (5 Hospitals) and North Malawi (Chitipa District Hospital and Ekwendeni Mission Hospital) on Local Anesthesia, Fractures in Children and Proctology.
In October the hospitals in Mulanje, Muona, Nsanje, Bangula and Nchalo and MASM Company in Blantyre and Zomba have been visited for one-day courses on Basic Trauma Life Support. The courses were well attended.
UROLOGY
In view of the overwhelming urologic pathology in Malawi and the low level of urologic care MALAWI.KOM is very happy with urologic specialist Gert Jan Montagne’s coming to swell the ranks.
During 3 months he worked at the Surgical Department of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre where he assisted in upgrading local urologic care and in training of surgical residents and Clinical Officers.
KALEMBA HOSPITAL BANGULA
With support via MALAWI.KOM the operating theatre has been completed and provided with theatre bed, theatre lights and other equipment. In addition the construction of the most needed fence parts around the hospital area could be realized.
On Wednesday October 15th during a festive ceremony attended by the local community and many invited guests Rt. Rev P. Musikuwa, Bishop of the Diocese of Chikwawa presided over the Blessing of the Theater bringing it into use officially.
